QIVIUT

To imagine something exceptional, this scarf might serve as a model.  It's a stole actually, and its real name is O-stole mio.  The pattern is from the hand of Natalia Vasilieva and can be downloaded free from Ravelry.
What is so special about this stole ?  Well then, the pattern has been designed in the Orenburg lace tradition and, what's more, I knitted it out of qiviut, the musk ox wool.  You will find a detailed explanation further on in this article.

First of all a word about the Orenburg lace.
Orenburg is a town in Russia, situated some 1,500 km southeast of Moscow, close to the border of the Republic of Kazakhstan.  A tradition of knitted shawls, which started around 1750, earned the Orenburg region an international reputation, to the extent that the Orenburg shawl has become one of the symbols of Russian artistic handicraft and even appears on a postage stamp.
In the beginning, the Orenburg shawl was knitted in pure goat's wool, down made of the undercoat of the local goat breed.  Later, in order to strengthen the wool and making it cheaper at the same time, silk was added.  The result is similar to cashmere and mohair since the undercoat of the Orenburg goat is one of the finest in the world.  Not surprising actually that the Orenburg shawl is also called the wedding ring shawl : it's so fine that, in spite of its dimensions, it can easily be pulled through a wedding ring.
Due to its fineness and softness the Orenburg shawl has always been in great demand.  During the 18th and 19th century France imported large amounts of this precious Orenburg goat's wool.  An attempt to obtain this wool in a cheaper manner, by breeding imported Orenburg goats in France, failed.  Indeed, in its adaptation to the warmer climate the Orenburg breed degenerated to ordinary goats, with harder and thicker hair.
The Orenburg tradition is also characterized by its pattern and the particular way of knitting.  Although the Orenburg shawl may as well appear in the form of a rectangle, a triangle or a square, the pattern contains always the same elements : a lace knitted border and a central section with the traditional Orenburg motives such as the mouse prints, peas, cat's paws, strawberries, snowflakes, honeycombs and diamonds.  Some of these motives are pretty complicated since the lace is knitted as well in the right as in the wrong side.  This may cause confusion and it takes some time before you get the hang of it.  But judging from the comments on the Ravelry website I am not the only one who met some difficulties with this very special knitting technique.  It's the so-called true lace.
According to the Orenburg tradition one starts knitting a shawl with the lower lace border.  Along that border you pick up the necessary stitches, so that the needle finally holds the stitches of the left border as well as these of the central part and the right border.  Then you continue to knit the left border, the central section and the right border together until you reach the desired length.  The stitches of the left border and the central part remain waiting on the left needle and while knitting the upper border you take along, every right row, one stitch from the central part, until you arrive at the corner of the left border.  And there, finally, the two borders are grafted together.
Also typical for the Orenburg shawl is that it doesn't have a specific front or back.  Indeed, both sides are identical since the shawl is knitted in garter stitch throughout.  Even knitting two stitches together is always done in garter stitich.
Another peculiarity of the Orenburg tradition is that the wool is first knitted before being washed.
To those who want to learn more about the Orenburg tradition I highly recommend Galina Khmeleva's book The Gossamer Webs Design Collection.

With this, everything would have been said on the technical details of my stole... if it had indeed been done out of Orenburg goat's wool.  But I chose qiviut.
Now what is qiviut ?
Musk ox in the wild
As mentioned in the introduction qiviut is the wool of the musk ox.  The name is misleading.  Indeed, this animal, by its appearance -the thick hairy coat and impressive horned head- inevitably evokes the image of the bison.  But the musk ox, as for skeleton and behavior, has much more in common with sheep and goats than with cattle.  The name only has been inspired by the strong musk scent emitted by the male during the mating season.  An adult musk ox measures at shoulder height no more than 1 to 1.5 m and weighs between 300 and 400 kg.
At one time, musk oxen lived throughout the northern hemisphere, among woolly mammoths, sabre-toothed tigers and aurochs, some 500,000 years ago.  But climate changes, intensive hunting and contraction of their habitat reduced the number of musk oxen considerably and the remaining herds were pushed back further and further into the wild and rigorous North.  At the end of the 19th century only a small number still lived in Greenland and the uninhabited areas of the far north of Canada.  No more musk oxen were found then throughout Alaska.  In 1930 however, a herd was imported from Greenland and succesfully reintroduced in the area.  By now, the musk ox has become a protected species being found in the wild in reserves in Siberia, Alaska and Norway, where they live in herds of two or three dozen specimens, usually led by a female.
Qiviut
The coat of the musk ox, one of the most insulating in the animal world, consists of two layers : an upper layer of long and coarse hair and an undercoat made of soft an woolly hair, which was called qiviut by the Eskimos.  It is the finest natural fibre in the world.  It is even softer than cashmere, insulates eight times more than sheep's wool and doesn't shrink in the wash, whatever the temperature of the water may be.  Qiviut is so extremely fine that it can't be knitted on itself.  That's why it is always mixed with silk.
Musk ox on a farm
The qiviut available nowadays on the market comes from musk ox farms, not only in Canada, Alaska and Greenland, but also in Siberia, Norway and Sweden.  In springtime, the musk ox is moulting.  The lower hair coat, coming off the skin by itself, is then gathered by combing, unlike sheep that are sheared.  A fully-grown musk ox yearly gives 2 to 3 kg of qiviut.  The gathered hair is then manually carded to remove all impurities.  After that, it is spun and only then it is washed.  Qiviut, being grayish brown by nature, tolerates dyeing well, so nowadays it can be found in many colours.
Qiviut may feel somewhat rough to the touch while knitting, but after the scarf has been blocked* it becomes as soft as a cloud (*blocking is a fairly complex process by which the wet shawl is stretched and fixed with threads and small nails in order to give it its final form).
A shawl or a scarf out of qiviut has an extremely high thermal quality and it doesn't degenerate.  On the contrary, the more it's worn and washed, the thinner, softer and woollier it becomes.  Moreover, frequent use makes it sheen and in the course of time it's gaining in beauty, something that unfortunately doesn't apply to us...

I knitted my stole out of 740 gr of qiviut bought during Bart & Francis' open house in 2013 : 50 % musk ox qiviut and 50 % special bombyx morus silk - 7/ Nm, 350 m for 50 gr, natural colour.  I used no 3 needles (US 3), but since I knit rather loosely I should try it next time with no 2,75 (US 2) or even with no 2,5 needles (US 1).  My stole measures 220 cm by 45 cm.

US 2) of zelfs 2,5 (US 1) proberen.  De stola meet 220 cm op 45 cm.
